Margin Trading Facility explained: benefits and risks

The Margin Trading Facility (MTF) lets you buy more shares than your cash alone allows. It can be useful – but because it uses borrowed money, you should understand it fully before you start.

🚀 How MTF works

You pay a part of the purchase value as margin, and the broker funds the rest. The shares you buy are pledged as security, and you pay interest on the funded amount for as long as you hold the position.

🧮 A simple example

Say you want to buy shares worth ₹1,00,000 and the margin needed for that stock is 30%. You pay ₹30,000 and the broker funds ₹70,000. You pay interest on the ₹70,000 for each day you hold. (This is only an illustration – actual margins and rates vary.)

👍 Why people use it

  • Take a bigger position with less cash upfront
  • Hold the position for more than a day, unlike intraday
  • Available only on approved, relatively liquid stocks

⚠️ The risks

  • Bigger losses: gains and losses are both on the full position, not just your margin.
  • Interest cost: it keeps adding up the longer you hold.
  • Margin calls: if prices fall, you must add funds or shares, or the broker may sell your position.
💡 Before you use MTF: know the interest rate, the margin for your stock, and how much fall you can handle. We'll walk you through all three.
